Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. Elections for the Japanese House of Councillors were held in Japan in July 1989. The election result was a setback for ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) because of the Recruit scandal, the introduction of a 3% consumption tax, and the involvement of Prime Minister Uno Sōsuke in a sex scandal.[citation needed] The Japan Socialist Party won a majority of seats.
