Joe Mensah

Joe Mensah (died 2003) was a Ghanaian singer and musician.[1]:{{{3}}}[2]:{{{3}}} Described as a music icon of Ghana,[3]:{{{3}}} he is one of the progenitors of the highlife music genre[4]:{{{3}}} and among the more renowned highlife musicians of the 1950s and 1960s.[5]:{{{3}}} His hit songs include "Bonsue" and "Rokpokpo"[3]:{{{3}}} from his album The Afrikan Hustle.[6]:{{{3}}}

Mensah played an essential role in the creation of the Ghana Musicians Union and served as its first president.[3]:{{{3}}} While in the United States he studied music at the Juilliard School[7]:{{{3}}} and founded a radio show on WKCR at Columbia University featuring African music, which continues today.[3]:{{{3}}}[8]:{{{3}}}
