Jon Oringer is an American entrepreneur and the founder of the popular microstock photography site Shutterstock. He is currently Shutterstock's CEO.

Biography

Oringer was raised in Scarsdale, New York.[2] He repaired computers while a child.[2] He graduated with a B.S. in Math and Computer Science from Stony Brook University and a M.S. in Computer Science from Columbia University.[3] Oringer is a certified commercial helicopter pilot.[4]

Oringer pioneered the subscription based microstock photography business model when he created Shutterstock in 2003. Oringer originally founded the company to sell his own images, but soon recognized that his work alone would not satisfy his customers' demand. In response, Oringer decided to become an agent as well, so he could offer other people's work as a complement to his own. By combining a personal interest in photography with a first hand knowledge of the demand for diverse and compelling imagery in today's marketplace, Oringer set out to provide high quality photographs in a way that he thought would make sense to his customers.[5]

The company has enjoyed robust growth since its inception; it grew from 30,000 royalty-free stock images in 2003 to over 11 million in February 2010, and over 18 million in April, 2012.[6] In 2009, Oringer was selected 41st on the Silicon Alley 100, an annual list of the 100 most influential entrepreneurs, investors, executives, and technologists in Manhattan.[7] In 2012, Business Insider named Oringer the fifth coolest person in all of New York technology.

In June, 2012, Oringer was recognized as New York's Technology Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young.[8]

In March 2013, Oringer was recognized as one of Crain's class of 2013 40 Under 40.[9] He was also recognized as Silicon Alley's first billionaire 55 percent ownership interest in Shutterstock which he controls through closely held investment company Pixel Holdings Inc.[1][10]
