"Mint" is a song recorded by Japanese recording artist Namie Amuro. After the release of her eleventh studio album Genic (2015), Amuro begun releasing non-album singles. The single premiered on May 18, 2016, as Amuro's second consecutive and eighth overall non-album single. Described by Amuro as a "thrilling track", "Mint" is musically a dance rock song. Lyrically, it discusses the theme of love and seduction.

Upon its release, the track garnered generally favourable reviews from music critics. Critics praised the song's composition and instrumentation, alongside highlighting Amuro's vocals. An accompanying music video was shot for the single; it features Amuro in a dark blue room, with numerous back-up dancers. The song will be performed on her 2016 Live Style concert tour in Japan.

Background and composition

After the critical and commercial success of Amuro's twelfth studio album Genic (2015), she started releasing non-album singles again. The first entry was "Red Carpet", which was performed through her Asian-wide concert tour name Livegenic 2015–2016.[1][2] Despite it's performance, it didn't appear on the live releases.[3][4] Then on March 31, music publication Jame World confirmed the release of a new single on May 18, which was revealed to be "Mint".[5] It was confirmed on Amuro's website that "Mint" would be used as the official theme song to the Fuji TV Japanese television drama series Bokuno Yabai Tsuma (translated to My Sick Wife).[6] The production team for the television series approach Amuro's record label and management team, Dimension Point, to participate in recording a song for the show, which she approved. Regarding the song, Amuro commented; "I'm thankful to have received the offer to provide the theme song. It's a fast-paced, thrilling track told from a women's perspective. I'll be happy if this song captured the essence of the drama."[7]

According to Amuro, she described the composition and production of the song as "thrilling". Musically, it is a dance rock song.[5] According to staff member's at Kimi Kame, they said the song is "packed full of catchy EDM elements and a catchy chorus".[8] A staff member at Tokyo Girls Update analysised the composition, and noted the use of "hard-hitting beats and some slithery guitar lines".[9]

Release

"Mint" had been fully leaked online four weeks before it's release date on May 18.[10] It was released in three formats; a stand-alone CD, a CD and DVD bundle, and a digital download. The CD single includes "Mint", the b-side track "Chit Chat", plus instrumental versions of both tracks. The CD also includes a bonus lyric booklet, printed on plain glossy white paper.[11] The CD and DVD format includes the same tracks and bonus lyric booklet, but includes the "Mint" music video on the latter disc.[12] The digital release includes the same four tracks, released only in Japan.[13] Both physical formats included a bonus poster, exclusive to first press editions.[14][15] The CD and digital artwork features a close-up of Amuro in a gold dress, whilst the CD and DVD bundle has a body shot with her holding a gold shoe.[11]

Critical response

Upon its release, "Mint" has received positive reviews form music critics. A staff member at Tokyo Girls Update was positive towards he song, praising Amuro's vocal performance; they felt that the instrumentation had complimented Amuro's vocals well.[9] Kimi Kame staff member's were positive towards the song, labelling the production "solid".[8] A reviewer at Josepvinaixa.com was positive, calling it some "cool music".[16] CD Journal staff memebrs were positive towards the song, highlighting the song's melody and composition as the best factors.[17] Similarly, a Japanese reviewer from Amazon commended the production and composition, labelling it as "memorable" and "impressive".[18]
