Founded by Paul Allen and his sister Jody Allen, the foundation's purpose is "to light up the world with meaningful change, starting close to home and moving around the globe."[3] Since its founding, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has invested nearly half of a billion dollars into improving communities throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The foundation looks for opportunities to fund programs in the Allen family’s areas of interest—the arts, financial empowerment, libraries, education and science and technology—that jumpstart meaningful change.

In 2018, Paul Allen died at the age of 65.
