Shopgate is a German and US company that develops mobile websites and native apps for online merchants.
The company
The German start-up was founded in 2009, and is now based in Austin, TX, Butzbach, Germany, and Warsaw, Poland.[1][2][3] The company was co-founded by Ortwin Kartmann and Andrea Anderheggen. Louis Bedigian described the rationale behind the founding as, “e-commerce is becoming more and more mobile. Merchants have responded to this shift by building mobile sites, which Shopgate aimed to provide.”[4]
In January 2016, after a Series C funding of $15 million, Shopgate Inc. officially announced the appointment of Marc Biel as Chief Executive Officer to lead its expansion strategy into the U.S. mobile market. The company's U.S. headquarters was subsequently moved to Austin, TX.
Shopgate offers services for online retailers to be successful in mobile. Their software-as-a-service (SaaS) enables online stores to easily create, maintain and optimize native apps and mobile websites for the iPhone, iPad, Android smartphones and tablets. In January 2016, Shopgate announced the launch of Apple TV shopping apps as part of its product suite, and are considered the first SaaS platform to offer this feature.
Shopgate allows users to build mobile storefronts for their businesses, and there were 12,000 customers using the platform as of January 2016.[1][2] Storefronts can be developed either as mobile apps or as mobile-oriented websites.[5] 80% of all mobile shopfronts in Germany have been created through Shopgate[4] and Shopgate was live in four additional European countries by late 2012.[6]
Shopgate has collectively raised $24 million in funding from Northcap in Denmark, Alternative Capital Management AG in Switzerland and Germany’s Creathor Ventures.[2] After arriving in the US, Shopgate partnered with TrustGuard in order to add security to its online shopping carts and purchases.[7] In February 2014, Shopgate acquired MagCorp.[1]
