The Art Institute of Vancouver is one of The Art Institutes, a system of over 45 educational institutions located throughout North America, providing education in design, media arts, event management, fashion and culinary arts. The Art Institutes system is a subsidiary of Education Management Corporation, which is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Art Institute of Vancouver has two campuses in Vancouver: The main campus is located at Renfrew Vancouver, and The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Vancouver.

The original main location of The Art Institute of Vancouver used to be in Burnaby, which was founded in 1979 and originally called the Center for Digital Imaging and Sound.[1] The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Vancouver was founded in 1982 and originally called Dubrulle International Culinary & Hotel Institute of Canada.[2] Since 2010 all the programs have now moved to its present location at the new Renfrew Campus. The culinary school still remains downtown Vancouver.

The Art Institute of Vancouver is registered with and accredited by the Private Post secondary Education Commission of British Columbia.[3]

The Art Institute offers courses in Visual Effects, Recording Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts, Culinary Arts, Electronic Music, Event Management, Digital Film & Video, Graphic Design, Animation, Fashion Design, Game Art & Design and other art disciplines. Since 2009 The Art Institute of Vancouver offers a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design.

Game Art & Design program

The Calgary Sun reported that in 2005 over 200 students were enrolled in The Art Institute of Vancouver's 18-month game art and design diploma program.[4] And in 2006 The Art Institute of Vancouver partnered with the International Game Developers Association and video game company Electronic Arts (EA) to host the ARTmageddon game industry festival. The school's teachers and students have been interviewed about game design and education by publications such as the Vancouver Courier and Gamasutra.[5][6]

On March 1, 2008 The Art Institute of Vancouver hosts the ARTimation Media Arts Festival. ARTimation will feature the areas of gaming, animation, visual effects, film, and recording arts—all of which are creative programs offered at The Art Institute’s Burnaby campus. The event features an innovative and interactive area where attendees can spend the day learning about media arts industries through game play, film screenings, production workshops, hands-on drawing tutorials, industry-insider information sessions, and high-profile keynote speakers.
