Twin Star Exorcists (双星の陰陽師 Sōsei no Onmyōji?) is a Japanese supernatural fantasy action shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Yoshiaki Sukeno. The series is published in Japan by Shueisha in its Jump Square magazine, and is published in English by Viz Media. A television anime adaptation by Pierrot began airing on April 6, 2016.

Plot

Rokuro Enmado is a young boy who used to be a powerful aspiring exorcist, before a tragic incident left his friends dead and made him abandon the profession. One day, he has a fateful encounter with Benio Adashino, a girl around his age and a well known exorcist from the east. According to prophecy, Rokuro and Benio are the "Twin Star Exorcists", and are destined to marry and have a child which will be the ultimate exorcist, capable of cleansing all evil spirits, or Kegare, from the world.

Characters

Rokuro Enmado (焔魔堂ろくろ Enmadō Rokuro?)
Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae[2]
The main protagonist. A brash and headstrong 14-year old exorcist who once wanted to be the strongest and exorcise all Kegare and sins until a tragedy 2 years ago, that cost the life of his friends at the Hiinastuki Dormitory he grew up in. Following this, his right arm becomes part Impurity with great offense. Rokuro was found by Seigen in Magano when he was 6 and had no memory, then Ryogo took him in. This tragedy made him swear off exorcism until he met Benio. Rokuro later seems to show signs of attraction from seeing Benio smile. It is discovered Rokuro is the reincarnation of Abe no Seimei the assume guardian of the Miko's.
Benio Adashino (化野紅緒 Adashino Benio?)
Voiced by: Megumi Han[2]
The main heroine. A serious, 14-year old girl, she vowed to become the strongest exorcist and destroy all Kegare to avenge her parents, who died protecting her. She wears a fox mask in battle. Upon meeting Rokuro she inspired him to return to being an exorcist. She loses both her legs in the battle with Yūto, but in the process, gets Impurity legs as replacements by Kamui (like Rokuro's arm) increasing her speed abilities to fight beside Rokuro. After the time skip, both seem to have become even closer. When receiving Sayo's enchantment, Benio's guardian appears to be of a dark entity that rivals with the Basara Impurity.
Yūto Ijika (石鏡悠斗 Ijika Yūto?)
Voiced by: Ayumu Murase[2]
He is an old friend turned enemy of Rokuro. Yūto was the cause of the Hiinastuki Tragedy, therefore causing chaos on Rokuro's lifetime, making Rokuro quit exorcism. Yūto is Benio's twin elder brother who supposedly died two years ago after using cadets of the Hiinatsuki Dormitory as experimental subjects. His objective is attain the philosophy of yang + yin. He was called an "exorcist that is artificially turned into an impurity" by Seigen in the manga series.
Mayura Otomi (音海繭良 Otomi Mayura?)
Voiced by: Yū Serizawa[3]
Rokuro's childhood friend and the daughter of one of the most powerful exorcists in the world. She was force to become a impurity by Yūto then goes on a rampage before being cleanse by Rokuro. After recovering, Mayura dedicates herself to follow Rokuro's path as a useful exorcist and requests Seigen to train her for the next two years. Initially timid with herself, she acquires Seigen's charm, Byakko, and soon takes her father's place among the Heavenly Commanders.
Seigen Amawaka (天若清弦 Amakawa Seigen?)
Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe[3]
Mayura's divorced father who became the former master of Rokuro and Yuto. Following the major battle of Yūto's first appearance, Seigen renounces his status as a Heavenly Commander.
Shimon Ikaruga (斑鳩 士門 Ikaruga Shimon?)
Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa[4]
A child prodigy who despite only being 2 years older than Rokuro has attained the rank of Heavenly Commander, holding the title "Suzaku". He is also Seigen's former student. He possesses the ability of flight. His goal is to end the 1000-year war and break Sayo's heavy burden and live a free life.
Sayo Ikaruga (斑鳩 小夜 Ikaruga Sayo?)
She is Shimon's younger cousin addressed as his little sister. He nicknames her "Chiiko". Despite being 11-years old she is the heir and Proctor of the Ikaruga House. Sayo is the host of the guardian Kuzunoha that allows her to bestow a ceremony of divination on exorcists to see their quality essence. However, harboring such an intense tattoo greatly shortens her lifespan. Spending her entire life on the closed-off island, she gains the wonderful opportunity to visit the mainland upon Rokuro's request to be tested rather he'll be chosen worthy, making Sayo fully captivated with him.
Arima Tsuchimikado (土御門 有馬 Tsuchimikado Arima?)
Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa[4]
The eccentric leader of all exorcists in Japan, and the one who arranges the marriage between Benio and Rokuro so they can have the Miko, the exorcist that will end a 1000-year war. He later relocates them to a fancy villa.
Ryogo Nagitsuji (椥辻 亮悟 Nagitsuji Ryōgo?)
Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno[4]
Rokuro's friend and fellow exorcist, who lives in the Seiko Dormitory and often acts as a surrogate big brother.
Shinnosuke Kunizaki
Voiced by: Daiki Yamashita[5]
He is a young exorcist who lives in the Seiko Dormitory.
Atsushi Sukumozuka
Voiced by: Taishi Murata[5]
He is a young exorcist who lives in the Seiko Dormitory.
Kamui (神威(かむい)?)
Voiced by: Yūki Ono[5]
A Basara Impurity and the youngest and eleventh of the eleven Basara. He is also responsible for the death of Benio's parents. Though, he tends to let his opponents choose the death of their preference, and always gives them ten seconds to decide. He seeks entertainment by fighting humans without caring about which side (Human or Impurity) will be destroyed, and loves humans because they are weak.
Kinako (きなこ?)
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama[4]
An anime original character who is Benio's familiar.

Media

Manga

Yoshiaki Sukeno began serializing the manga in Shueisha's Jump Square magazine on October 4, 2013.[6] A special chapter was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump in April 2016.[7]

Viz Media licensed the series for publication in North America, publishing the first volume in July 2015.[8][9]

Anime

An anime television adaptation was announced on the January 2016 cover of Jump Square on December 4, 2015.[25] The series is directed by Tomohisa Taguchi and written by Naruhisa Arakawa,[26] with animation by Studio Pierrot.[27] Additionally, Shishō Igarashi is serving as assistant director, Kikuko Sadakata is designing the characters, and Itsuko Takeda is serving as chief animation director.[26] The opening theme song is "Valkyrie -Ikusa Otome-" (Valkyrie -戦乙女-?, lit. "Valkyrie -War Maiden-") by Wagakki Band,[28] while the ending theme is "Eyes" (アイズ Aizu?) by Hitomi Kaji.[3] The second opening theme will be performed by the idol group i☆Ris.[29][30]

The series began airing on April 6, 2016 on TV Tokyo and other TX Network stations,[4][31] and later on AT-X.[32] Crunchyroll is simulcasting the series worldwide outside of Asia.[33] Chinese streaming site iQiyi has listed the series with fifty episodes.[34]

The series has been licensed by Anime Limited in the United Kingdom.[35]

In Kyoto, Benio prepares for her trip to Tokyo, while her grandmother warns her of rumors about an exorcist with power equal to or greater than hers. She boards a train in Yokohama, only for it to be attacked by Kegare. After entering the spirit world Magano to defeat them, she exhausts her strength. Meanwhile, after running away from his friend Ryogo's attempt to have him participate in an exorcism, Rokuro witnesses Benio suddenly appear and fall from the sky. He catches her and they both fall into a river. After they become lost while following her map, a Kegare attacks two children. Benio follows it to Magano, and Rokuro is pulled in with her. She easily defeats the monster, but a great many more appear. While fighting a gigantic Kegare, her Exorcist Enchantments finally break. Rokuro faces the monster and removes an enchantment from his arm, transforming it and allowing him to destroy the Kegare with a single strike. After the credits, a mysterious long-haired man declares that Rokuro and Benio are the "Twin Star Exorcists". 
2 "Intersection of Twin Stars - A Fateful Fight"

After the battle with the Kegare, Rokuro and Benio immediately take a disliking to each other. Rokuro is shocked when he returns to the dorm and finds that Benio will be living there. The next morning, Arima Tsuchimikado, the leader of all exorcists, arrives and orders that all the regional leaders be assembled in the Five Mirror Chamber. Once they are assembled, he announces that he has received a prophecy revealing the identity of the Miko, the strongest exorcist who will destroy all Kegare. He then asks Benio and Rokuro to step forward and commands them to fight, tricking Rokuro into the battle by belittling his dead friends. Rokuro is forced to go all out as Benio attacks him. Just as the two are about to injure each other, Arima stops the fight by cancelling out their enchantments, and apologizes to Rokuro for insulting his friends. He then reveals what the prophecy told him: Rokuro and Benio are the Twin Star Exorcists, destined to marry and give birth to the Miko. 
3 "Differing Intentions - A Hero's Worth"

Rokuro wakes from a nightmare of being married to Benio. Before leaving for an exorcism, Ryogo tells him to help Benio now that she has transferred to his school. Rokuro is displeased to learn that she will be in the same class as him. When Ryogo and his group run into trouble during their exorcism, Benio leaves to assist them. After school, noting that Rokuro has been acting depressed, Mayura decides to take him to an amusement park. The giant Kegare that Benio is fighting smashes into the park's roller coaster, leaving two children dangling precariously in one of the cars. Benio slays the monster, and Rokuro saves the two boys just as the car plunges from the track. On the way home, Mayura tells Rokuro that it is at times like this that he is cool. 
4 "The Sound of Magano - Bothersome Twosome"

Late one evening, Ryogo confides in Benio about how he wishes Rokuro would return to being an exorcist. The next morning, Rokuro and Ryogo have an altercation just before the latter leaves for an exorcism. Arriving at the house they are to exorcise, where eleven people have disappeared over time, Ryogo, Shinnosuke, and Atsushi find a room brimming with malevolent energy. Entering Magano, they encounter a gigantic, two-headed Kegare, which knocks Shinnosuke and Atsushi back through the gate, leaving Ryogo stranded. Exhausted, they return to the dorm and tell Rokuro what happened, forcing him to beg Benio for help in rescuing his friend. Ryogo, out of the gate talismans that would allow him to escape Magano, is being brutally beaten by the two-headed Kegare. Just as he is about to be eaten, Rokuro arrives and punches the monster, saving him. Benio joins them to help fight off a swarm of smaller Kegare, allowing Rokuro to deliver the killing blow to the two-headed one. He apologizes to Ryogo for their fight that morning, and they return to the dorm. While Shinnosuke and Atsushi take Ryogo to the hospital, Rokuro stays behind to thank Benio. 
5 "Twelve Guardians, Vermilion Bird - The Guardian Shimon"

In Kyoto, Arima Tsuchimikado dispatches a mysterious exorcist to Rokuro's home city of Narukami to investigate the increase in Kegare appearances. Meanwhile, Rokuro begins to reconsider his decision to abandon exorcism after visiting Ryogo in the hospital. After receiving a report of twenty Kegare appearing, Benio, Rokuro, and the others from the dorm find that a group of elementary school children have been taken. Encountering an overwhelming number of Kegare, they succeed in saving the children, but find themselves facing a dire situation until the exorcist from Kyoto arrives. He easily destroys the Kegare and is revealed to be Shimon Ikaruga, the youngest of the Twelve Guardians, a group consisting of the most powerful of exorcists bearing titles derived from the twelve familiars of Abe no Seimei. Shimon is unimpressed by Rokuro, but Benio comes to the latter's defense, holding Shimon back as another Kegare appears, allowing him to witness Rokuro's strength. Shimon detects a strange presence, but is summoned back to Kyoto before he can investigate it. Afterwards, Rokuro realizes that he feels inspired by Shimon. 
6 "Benio and Mayura - Girls Party"

Mayura begins to worry about Benio after the latter continues to leave school early, thinking that she might be hanging out with a gang. She begins making attempts to get close to her, but they end in failure. Back at the dorm, Rokuro surprises everyone by offering to help with an exorcism since Ryogo has just gotten out of the hospital. The next morning, Ryogo asks Benio to sit out on the day's exorcisms and let Rokuro handle them, so she goes out jogging. She encounters Mayura, and they bond over ohagi, Benio's favorite food. However, as they eat, a fissure to Magano opens outside the building, prompting Benio to open a gate and save a bystander from the Kegare. Upon returning, she finds Mayura anxiously waiting for her. Rokuro returns from the exorcism to find Mayura at the dorm, furious that he is living together with Benio. Meanwhile, Jiisama finds something troubling in Magano.

Volume 1 reached 11th place on the weekly Oricon manga charts, with 29,527 copies sold;[56] volume 2 reached 23rd place, with 30,734 copies;[57] volume 3 reached 46th place, with 38,835 copies;[58] volume 4 reached 24th place, with 37,900 copies;[59] volume 5 also reached 24th place, with 47,489 copies;[60] volume 6 reached 32nd place, with 48,029 copies;[61] volume 7 reached 20th place, with 48,762 copies;[62] and volume 8 reached 11th place, with 56,947 copies.[63]

Volume 3 of the English translation appeared on the New York Times Manga Best Sellers list for two nonconsecutive weeks, first at 8th place and then at 6th.[64][65]
