Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. Walters & Cohen is an architectural practice based in London, England. The practice's completed work includes public and private buildings, educational, commercial, housing and cultural projects.

The practice was founded by Cindy Walters and Michál Cohen in 1994 and employs architectural staff from around the world and practice has received attention for the high percentage of female staff. Cindy Walters and Michál Cohen jointly received the Architects' Journal inaugural Woman Architect of the Year Award in 2012 The judges cited the "consistent quality of their architecture, combined with the ethos of the practice," remarking upon their "active involvement with the RIBA and in teaching and examining at architecture schools". At the time of the award, 70% of the practice's architectural staff were women.[1] In 2012 the practice won in three categories at the BCSE awards (British Council for School Environments). As well as winning the Jonathan Ibikunle School Architect of the Year Award, three of the practice's schools also won awards: Elm Park Primary School, Hylands Primary School and Colston's Girls' School.[2] In 2008 the firm's design for Cotham School, a Wave 4 BSF (Building Schools for the Future) school in Bristol, was rated excellent by CABE, one of only two built schemes to be awarded top marks by the design watchdog.[3]

Projects

Walters & Cohen's past projects have included:

  • South Camden Community School (Summer 2013). Refurbishment and new build elements including a new science and technology building and a new theatre.[4]
  • Ryde School (October 2011). New entrance building and re-organisation/ redevelopment of existing facilities.[5]
  • Colston's Girls' School (September 2011). Refurbishment of existing buildings and a new build section.[6][7]
  • Horniman Museum and Gardens (September 2011). Redevelopment of the gallery and museum including a new educational building, the Garden Pavilion.[8]
  • Hylands School (June 2011). Designed and built a new two-form entry primary school.[3]
  • Elm Park School, Hornchurch (May 2011). New build primary school.[6]
  • Cotham School (February 2011). New buildings, replacing existing buildings and increasing pupil numbers.[9]
  • The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art (February 2008). Small gallery for the exhibiting of botanical art in the grounds of Kew Gardens.[10]
  • New Dauntsey House/ Becket House (June 2006). Office building with commercial and retail space.[11]
  • Bedales School (August 2005). New administration and teaching facilities including classrooms and art, design and technology facilities totaling 50 rooms.[12]
  • Wakehurst Place Visitor Centre (February 2004). New visitor and educational centre, 'Forest Pavilion' at Wakehurst Place gardens.[13]

  • 2010 Civic Trust Awards. Civic Trust Award for The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art, Kew Gardens[16]
  • 2007 RIBA Awards. RIBA Award for Architecture: Redbrook Hayes School, Staffordshire[17]
  • 2005 RIBA Awards. RIBA Award for Architecture: Wakehurst Place Visitor Centre, West Sussex[13]
