Brian Teacher defeated Kim Warwick in the final, 7–5, 7–6^(7–4), 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1980 Australian Open. The men's tournament was held from late December to early January of 1981 – separately from the women's event, which was already held during late November.

Guillermo Vilas was the two-time defending champion, but lost in the semifinals to Warwick.
