Adoor or Adur is a major Town and Thaluk Headquarters in Pathanamthitta district of the Indian state of Kerala.[1] A Tehsil#India|taluk spread over an area of 20.42 km2, and has been a municipality since 1992. Adoor and Thiruvalla are the Two Revenue Divisions of Pathanamthitta district. Adoor Revenue division contains 3 Thaluks (Adoor,Kozhencherry,Konni).

Etymology

Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. Adoor is located in Pathanamthitta district and is one of the prominent town in Central Travancore. Geographically it is situated between Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam. Before the formation of Pathanamthitta district in 1982, Adoor was in Kollam district.

Mannadi, situated in Adoor is where Velu Thampi Dalawa, the renowned freedom fighter of Travancore and diwan (title)|diwan of Travancore Princely State, spent his last days. A historical museum, a statue of Veluthampi Dalawa and an open-air theatre are the major attractions here. The Kerala Institute of Folklore and Folk Arts functions here. The ancient Bhagavathy Temple at Mannadi has some exquisite stone sculptures. The annual temple festival is held in February/March.

Adoor is famous for its contribution to arts and culture, as well as for being the birthplace of well-known personalities as Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Adoor Bhasi, Adoor Bhavani, Adoor Pankajam, Adoor Govindankutty, Chandralekha, Adoor Prakash,Pazhakulam Madhu etc..

Well known events in Adoor include Ecumenical Conventions of Christian churches, Ezhamkulam Thookkam in Ezhamkulam Devi Temple, Gajamela at Sree Parthasarathy Temple, Thrichengamagalem mahadevar Temple Ulsavam, Kodumon Chilanthy Temple, and so on.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Adoor had a population of 28,943, with males constituting 48% of the population and females 52%. Adoor has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 49% of the males and 51% of females literate.[dubious – discuss] 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Climate

Adoor has more or less the same climatic conditions as prevalent elsewhere in Kerala, with a dry season spanning December to February and hot season from March to May. The climate is generally moderate, with temperatures rising from 20 C to 39 C. The Monsoon#Southwest monsoon|southwest monsoon from June to September and the Monsoon#Northeast monsoon|northeast monsoon from October to November provide fairly good rain.

Crops

Adoor possesses fertile agricultural land and plantations. Tapioca, varieties of vegetables and spices like ginger and Black pepper|pepper are extensively cultivated. The taluk also abounds in extensive rubber plantations. Adoor is famous for its plantations of mosambi.

Sreenarayanapuram Temple, Manakala

The main attraction in Adoor is the Sree Parthasarathy Temple. Parthasarathy Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is also known as Parthasarathy - the charioteer of Parthan, another name for Arjuna. It is one of the oldest Krishna temples in Kerala. Gajamela, the elephant pageant on the concluding day of the annual festival at the temple, is the main highlight of the 10-day festival celebrations. Hundreds of people throng the temple premises to witness this spectacle where nine tuskers come in their ceremonial attire to entice all.

The Mannadi Temple has historical importance due to the sacrifice of Travancore Diwan Velu Thampi Dalava (1765–1809), who fought the British Raj.

Transportation is mainly dependent on state-run Kerala State Road Transport Corporation|KSRTC buses as well as private buses. Adoor is well connected to the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram by KSRTC Fast Passenger, super fast, deluxe, and a/c buses. Buses provide access to almost all district headquarters of Kerala and to towns in Tamil Nadu such as Coimbatore, Tenkasi, and Sengottai and daily trips to Mookambika, Munnar, Kumali, Ooty, Chennai, and Bangalore

Railway

The nearest railway stations are at Chengannur railway station|Chengannur (25 kilometres), Tiruvalla railway station|Thiruvalla (35 kilometres) and Kayamkulam Junction railway station|Kayamkulam (30 kilometres), Kottarakara.
