Bittersweet is a collaborative cover album of jazz standards by American musician Mark Isham and Australian vocalist Kate Ceberano.[1] It is Ceberano's first jazz album in twenty years.[2] The album received an ARIA nomination for Best Jazz Album at the 2009 ARIA Awards.[3]

Background and recording

Isham and Ceberano had performed together at the Sundance Film Festival in 2003 and wanted to record an album together. In early 2009, Ceberano flew to Isham's five-acre estate outside Los Angeles and recorded the album in his home studio. The pair recorded the album live without overdubs in just three days.[4]

Critical reception

Larry Crane of TapeOp said of the album, "A backing band of Alan Pasqua (piano), Tom Warrington (bass) and Peter Erskine (drums) doesn't hurt in catching the late night, smoky vibe of these mostly downtempo tracks. With top players and the singer laying down tracks live in a room, the depth and dynamics in this recording are a pleasure."[10]

Charts

Bittersweet debuted at number 10 on the ARIA Jazz & Blues albums chart in the week commencing 20 April 2009. It peaked at number 3 on the chart four weeks later. It also charted at number 90 on the ARIA albums chart.
