David Johansen and the Harry Smiths is the first of two albums David Johansen released with the "Harry Smiths". The first of the two albums was released in 2000. David Johansen created the album following a folk scene that was taking place in the late 1990s in New York City clubs. Inspired by the 1997 reissue of The Anthology of American Folk Music (a compilation of 1920s and 1930s country and blues recordings assembled by musicologist Harry Smith), Johansen and a named his band "the Harry Smiths" and recorded and performed songs from, or inspired by, the Anthology.

The album marked the first time since 1984 when David Johansen left his alter-ego, Buster Poindexter, and returned to recording albums under his real name.
