Dead or Alive++ is a remake of the 1996 fighting game Dead or Alive, developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo. Released in 1998 exclusively in arcades, this game is based on the PlayStation port of Dead or Alive, even including that version's two exclusive characters, Ayane and Bass Armstrong, but features slightly updated gameplay mechanics that were later expanded upon with its sequel, Dead or Alive 2, which was released the following year. It also includes updated character models similar to those later used in DOA2. The game also features more balanced and forgiving artificial intelligence compared to the original game, which was well known for having a very high level of artificial difficulty similar to other arcade fighting games of the time such as Mortal Kombat II, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Virtua Fighter 2, and Tekken and its sequel. The game ran on the PlayStation-based Sony/Capcom ZN-1 arcade board, unlike the original, which ran on the Sega Model 2 arcade board, the same board that Virtua Fighter 2 ran on. Subsequently, the game's graphics are significantly inferior to that of the original, featuring 2D backgrounds (much like the Sega Saturn and PlayStation ports of Dead or Alive) instead of the original 3D backgrounds used in the Model 2 arcade version.
