FIFA Online was a free-to-play massively multiplayer online (MMO) football/soccer game which was announced in early January 2010 and later released on May 26 of that same year.

It featured microtransactions which was affirmed by EA that "they would be optional and WOULD NOT have any impact on the specific gameplay".[citation needed] It started out with 30 leagues (which meant that there would be 500 teams and 15,000 players available in the game) but was later updated to all of the current leagues and teams.

FIFA Online started out with only 3 forms of gameplay- League, Versus and 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, but then a new mode was later added during FIFA Online's "Big Reset" which was called Tournaments. FIFA Online was one of the most successful football MMOs on the Internet.

On the March 18, 2011, it was announced on the FIFA Online Forums website and on FIFA Online's homepage that the game would end and the servers were closed on March 25, 2011.

Gameplay

FIFA Online uses the FIFA 10 game engine and its in-match gameplay is very similar to FIFA 10's. Its two main forms of control are mouse and keyboard, but it is also possible to use a gamepad if the player desires.

After starting the game players make a manager, choose their league team and improve it by earning in game currency in different modes and using it in the Game Store. Also, after each ten matches players are rewarded randomly with a player contract item which allows a player to be signed for a certain amount of money, or a stats boost that can be equipped on players. Players also have manager levels which increase with the XP gained after every match. The difficulty has 20 levels, and adjusts to fit the player's skill level.

Modes

League Mode: the player can play this mode in either single-player or co-op.

Versus Mode: one player makes an arena in one of the lobbies and another player will join. After each match the winner's multiplayer rating increases.

2010 FIFA World Cup: the player can play this mode in either "Tournament" or "Versus" form.

Tournaments: The player can play in EA Sports-made tournament for trophies to fill their Trophy Room.

Controversy and Release Date

Beta ended and will not return as the owners of a similar game, FIFA Online 2, asked EA to close down the game for an unknown amount of money.[original research?]
