Faustino José da Madre de Deus

Faustino José da Madre de Deus de Sousa Coutinho (died June 1833) was a Portuguese military officer, writer and educator. A noted defender of the rights of the Church and of the traditional estates, he helped lead the struggle against early nineteenth century revolutionary movements.

Biography

Faustino José da Madre de Deus was born in Lisbon. He attended the S. Lucas College at Casa Pia and studied mathematics under José Anastácio da Cunha. Madre de Deus joined the Portuguese Navy, reaching the rank of lieutenant. After leaving the service due to a dispute concerning his promotion, he became a private tutor. Faustino José da Madre de Deus was a freemason early in life, later writing openly against it.
