Personal life

Dr. Hani Sarie-Eldin was born in 1966 in Cairo, to Egyptian parents rooted in Menya Governorate. His father, Salah Mohamed Sarie-Eldin passed away in 1983 when Dr. Sarie-Eldin was only 17 years old. Dr. Sarie-Eldin followed in his father’s footsteps and became a lawyer. After his father’s death, his mother supported him throughout his personal and professional paths until she peacefully passed away in 2011. Dr. Sarie-Eldin is married and has two children, a 20-year-old son and a 14-year-old daughter.

Dr. Sarie-Eldin has published many articles and books in English and Arabic focusing on law, economic development and how economic reform is not possible without institutional and social reform to turn policies and visions into reality.

Career

Dr. Sarie-Eldin graduated from the Faculty of Law, Cairo University in 1987 with high honors.

In 1988, he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Commercial and Maritime Law, Cairo University.

In 1988 and 1989 respectively, he obtained two diplomas in public and private law, from Cairo University and was ranked first among his classmates.

Dr. Sarie-Eldin traveled to the United States, France, and England to continue his postgraduate studies.

In 1994, he acquired his PHD in International Business Law , from Queen Mary College, University of London, then he was appointed to teach at the Center for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary College. He specialized in legislative reforms and economic development in emerging markets.

After returning to Egypt in 1996, he engaged in academic work as a staff member in the Department of Commercial and Maritime Law at Cairo University.

In 2009, Dr. Sarie-Eldin became head of the department until 2013. He has been in the law practice since 1996 until he became a senior partner of Shalakany Legal Investment Firm. He specialized in capital, banking, infrastructure financing and corporate restructuring.

In 2002, Dr. Sarie-Eldin became Legal Advisor to Al-Futtaim Group in Dubai, the largest business group in the UAE with more than 120 companies in 13 countries. He led the Group’s restructuring during his time there.

In 2005, Dr. Sarie-Eldin returned to Egypt and became Chairman of the Capital Market Authority . During that time Dr. Sarie-Eldin along with his team succeeded in leading the largest institutional and legislative reforms in the Egyptian capital market, making it one of the best growing markets in the Middle East by the end of 2007.

In 2008, Dr. Sarie-Eldin founded Sarie-Eldin & Partners – a law firm specializing in capital, financing, corporation and international commercial arbitration, making it in 2010, the winner of the Best Law Firm in Egypt in International Finance and in 2012 and 2014 the Best Law Firm in acquisitions. Sarie-Eldin & Partners Firm is currently the legal advisor to the development of the Suez Canal corridor project.

Dr. Sarie-Eldin also has a wide expertise in international arbitrations and has appointed as an arbitrator in over 32 international and domestic arbitrations.

Dr. Sarie-Eldin contributed to the formulation and preparation of many economic legislations, including: regulations for the capital market for investment funds and acquisitions, Consumer Protection Act, Investment law amendment, the Central Bank law, Competition Protection and Anti-trust Law, Model law to finance infrastructure projects, Model law for electronic signature, United Nations Commission for International Trade Law, through his work as a member of the UNCITRAL Commission of the United Nations.

Dr. Sarie-Eldin supervised more than 40 Masters and Doctoral theses. He served as a board member of several public companies and institutions to restructure and enhance their performance:

Dr. Sarie-Eldin enjoys extensive expertise in the management and performance development of stock exchange companies. Dr. Sarie-Eldin is currently:

  • Chairman of SODIC (Sixth of October Development and Investment Company(, one of the largest real estate development companies in Egypt with a capital of EGP 2 billion
  • Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Philip Morris Egypt
  • Board member of Lecico Egypt
  • Board member of Toyota Egypt.

Political Views

In addition to his work as an attorney, law professor and international arbitrator, Dr. Hani Sarie-Eldin has contributed to the political life in Egypt following the January 25th Revolution in 2011, as following:

  • Member of the first presidential council for the Free Egyptian Party (Al-Maṣrīyīn al-Aḥrār) ,which gained 12 seats in Egypt’s 2012 Parliament..
  • Member of the National Salvation Front (Gabhet El Enkaz) which was formed by several Egyptian alliances as a unified oppositional front against the old Islamic regime.
  • Following protests and July 2013 popular revolution, Dr. Hani Sarie-Eldin contributed to the establishment of the National Group and the Development Movement to provide technical support for young independent parliamentary candidates to run for the 2015 parliamentary elections.

Volunteer work

Dr. Sarie-Eldin has also engaged in numerous voluntary work out of his belief in the importance of developing poor areas and supporting SMEs as a backbone to the Egyptian economy as following:-

  • Establishing the Support Egypt Fund 306306, where he held the position of Vice Chairman of the Fund’s Board of Trustees. The Fund, which has a capital around EGP 800 million helped the development of poor villages in Upper Egypt and the elimination of highly populated slums.
  • Helping to develop and heading the Board of Directors of the management company and investment committee of a fund to finance SMEs projects with investments exceeding EGP 150 million to achieve sustainable development and eliminating unemployment.
  • Being a member of the Egyptian-American Fund, which has a capital of $300 million allocated to finance SMEs.
  • Being a board member of the Egyptian-British Business Council.
  • Being a member of Nile University board of trustees.

Awards

  • In 2002, Dr. Sarie-Eldin was awarded an Academic Excellency Award from Cairo University for his research in Legal Sciences.
  • In 2010, Sari- Eldin & Partners was awarded the Best Law Firm in Egypt for providing professional legal services to the financial and direct investment sector, from the Global Trade Matters, in partnership with the Egyptian stock Exchange.

Dr. Sarie-Eldin has numerous legal publications in Arabic and English. His publications received the Cairo University Incentive Award for Best Legal Research.
