Dr Hemchandra Baburao Kekre (4 April 1935 - 5 November 2014[citation needed]) was a Professor and Head of Computer Science Department [1] of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.[2] He was among the initial professors who started the computer science department in IIT Mumbai.

Education Achievements

He graduated with degrees including B.E. (Hons) in Telecommunications engineering from Jabalpur Engineering College, M.Tech in Electrical engineering from IIT Mumbai, M.S.Engg (Electrical engineering) from University of Ottawa, and lastly Ph.D in Electrical Engineering in IIT Mumbai. He then returned to join IIT Mumbai. When computer science department was being started in 1970s, he moved from electrical department to the computer science department of IIT Mumbai. He was head of Computer Science department of IIT Mumbai between 1978-1984. He retired from IIT Mumbai in 1995, and joined Thadomal Shahani Engineering College in Mumbai as a Professor of Computer Science. Vice Principal, and Head of Department of Computer Science. In 2008 he joined MPSTME, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies as a Senior Professor of Computer Science. He worked in NMIMS till his death.[3]

Transformations named after him include Kekre wavelet transform,[4][5] Kekre's hybrid wavelet transform technique,[6] and Kekre’s fast codebook generation,[7] Kekre's LUV color space [8]

He is author of various books on computer science, some of which are available on Amazon[9]
