IKUSI – Ángel Iglesias S.A is a business group located in San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa), Spain which develops activity in the field of Electronics and Information and Communication Technologies. The parent company was founded more than 60 years ago. Besides its presence across the whole of Spain, IKUSI currently has extensive international coverage.

History

In 1949 Ángel Iglesias, the company’s founder and current President, began the industrial activities which led IKUSI to become the company it is today. At that time, Spanish households started to receive the TV signals, and household appliances had just started to appear. In the 1960s, the company was structured as a legal entity to form the current IKUSI. In 1964 the Research and Development Department (currently R&D&I) was set up.

Over the following years, until the end of the 1980s, IKUSI diversified its activity to include security technologies, public information systems, remote control devices for cranes and telemetering systems for domestic energy consumption and other services. In 1989, the first products were developed using fibre optic technology, experts systems, etc.

In the 1990s IKUSI started its internationalisation process. At this time, it has subsidiaries in Germany, Australia, Chile, Colombia, United Arab Emirates, France, Mexico, Portugal and Russia, as well as many local offices in over 80 countries worldwide.

IKUSI’s workforce is composed of around 1000 people.

In 2006 IKUSI joined the Leading Brands of Spain Forum.

Activities

Ikusi’s focuses its activity around different business areas:

  • Television and Multimedia : Design and manufacture of electronic equipment for the processing and distribution of image and sound signals, as well as for the development of solutions for telecommunications services which require high-frequency or optical transmission technology.
  • Remote Control : Development and manufacture of industrial wireless remote control devices for load handling and lifting processes.
  • Transport : Design, installation, development, commissioning and maintenance of security systems, communications and operations for markets like Airports, Traffic, Railway and other complex infrastructures. Turnkey projects, tailor-made to suit the specific needs of each client.
  • Health: ICT solutions and services for the Health system, its managers, professionals and users, via bIDEA, Ikusi’s subsidiary specialising in eHealth.
  • Voice and Data Networks : Integration of technological solutions to networks for communications, telecommunications and security systems.

Innovation

In 2010, Ikusi allocated 7.7 million Euros to innovation, which represents an increase of 35% on the previous year. The company currently has 36 patents in force.

IKUSI participates in the Basque Government innovation promotion programmes, among others; in various Spanish innovation forums and committees, as well as in technological platforms for the European Framework Programme. Throughout 2010, Ikusi’s Transport Area has participated in many research projects, some of the most significant being Telmax, iTOLL and Kantxa, which culminated in 2010; and Intelvía and Iñude, which are still in operation. Likewise, in 2010 a further 7 research projects were awarded: GENESyS, berriTRANS, BIDETIK, ACTUA, ME4SURE, ARIADNA and SAFE IN. The Television Area has participated in four technological research projects: VITAL (Vida Digital), R2D2Networks (Road to media-aware user-dependent self-adaptive networks), SATURNO (Satellite Universal TV Redistribution Network) and IT-Hogar.

IKUSI’s efforts regarding research and innovation were recognised in 2005 by the prestigious Príncipe Felipe Award for Business Excellence in Technological Innovation. Among Ikusi’s technological milestones we can highlight the following:

  • 1980: First Spanish amplifier for CATV networks.
  • 1981: First Spanish headend for CATV networks.
  • 1984: First Spanish remote control for industrial applications.
  • 1985: First converter with digital frequency synthesis.
  • 1988: First Spanish fibre optic system for CATV networks.
  • 1993: Installation of the first Public Information System based on IP technology (Madrid-Barajas Airport).
  • 1997: First Transparent Digital Transmodulator. World exclusive.
  • 1999: First Spanish transceiver for VSAT networks.
  • 2000: First Digital Analogue Transmodulator with internal conditional access. World exclusive. First electronic voting system based on traditional ballot papers. World exclusive.
  • 2002: First Spanish transceiver for LMDS applications.
  • 2003: First onboard digital Interphone system on trains. World exclusive.
  • 2004: Pioneering monitoring system based on online video on trains via WLAN wireless coverage.
  • 2006: Installation of the first digital PA system based entirely on IP protocols (SIMADI) (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Airport). World exclusive.
  • 2008: First transmodulator for digital satellite to terrestrial television. World exclusive.
  • 2009: Approval of the first subscription DTT receiver in Spain. 2008 Installation of the first Airport Processes Control and Optimisation System (SCOP) (Palma de Mallorca Airport).
