James Edward Berry (October 2, 1881, near Oak Grove, Jackson County, Missouri[1] – November 22, 1966, Stillwater, Oklahoma) was an American politician who served as the Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma from 1935 to 1955.[2]
Early life
Berry was born in Missouri in 1881 and came to Oklahoma as a teenager, first living on a farm near Blackwell, Oklahoma and moving to Stillwater, Oklahoma to attend Oklahoma A&M College.[2] Berry served in the Oklahoma National Guard, rising to the rank of major, before the end of his service.[2] A banker, he was elected president of the Stillwater bank in 1929.[2]
Political career
Berry lost his first race for Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma in 1930.[2] He won the seat on his second attempt in 1934 and was sworn in alongside Governor of Oklahoma E.W. Marland in 1935.[2] He continued to serve until 1955, under four different governors.[2]
