OpenStax College is an initiative of OpenStax CNX (formerly Connexions) at Rice University. Since 2012 OpenStax has created peer-reviewed open textbooks, which are available in both printed and digital formats. In December 2012 "College Physics" became the first OpenStax textbook to be released in iBook format.[1]

Aiming to compete with major publishers' offerings,[2][3] the project was initially funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the 20 Million Minds Foundation, and the Maxfield Foundation.[2][4][5] All textbook content is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution Licenses and the textbooks can be modified to suit different purposes by users. Specifically, the books use Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) License, which only requires attribution.
