Arijit Singh (25 April 1988) is an Indian playback singer and a music programmer. Born in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, his career began upon participating in the reality show Fame Gurukul (2005), which he lost the finals. After winning another reality show called 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, Singh built a recording setup of his own, beginning his journey with music programming. Subsequently, he went to become as an assistant music programmer to Pritam Chakraborty, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar and Mithoon.

Singh rose to widespread prominence and became a household name with the release of "Tum Hi Ho" from Aashiqui 2 (2013). He was bestowed with the Best Male Playback Singer award for the song, in 59th Filmfare Awards. In 2014, he collaborated with Jeet Gannguli—for whom he performed the rest of his tracks in Aashiqui 2 —for CityLights, where he rendered the romantic version of the song "Muskurane", which fetched him most nominations in the year. Gannguli-composed Suno Na Sangemarmar and Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy's sufi song, Mast Magan garnered him another two nominations in 60th Filmfare Awards.

Arijit Singh made his Bollywood debut with a Mithoon-composition, "Phir Mohabbat" from Murder 2, which was recorded in 2009 though released in 2011. The following year, he worked with Pritam for four of his films. He rendered four version of the song "Raabta" in Agent Vinod. He also lent his voice for Chirantan Bhatt in 1920: Evil Returns and for Vishal–Shekhar in Shanghai, where the song "Duaa" from the latter fetched him Mirchi Music Award for Upcoming Male Playback Singer award and was nominated in the same category for "Phir Le Aya Dil" from Barfi!.

Moreover, he dubbed for Shah Rukh Khan in the song "Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari" which was composed by Vishal–Shekhar. Apart from rendering the duet version of "Har Kisi Ko", the year marks his first collaboration with SharibToshi and Sanjay Leela Bhansali by singing the song "Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse" for the former and the semi-classical number, "Laal Ishq" for the latter.

In 2014, Singh worked with Sajid–Wajid for the first time, performing two tracks of Main Tera Hero and the song "Raat Bhar". He rendered three re-mixed songs; Amit Trivedi's "Hungama Ho Gaya", Sharib–Toshi's "Samjhawan" and Arko Pravo Mukherjee's "Aaj Phir". The year marks his first collaboration with Vishal Bhardwaj, Tony Kakkar, Palash Muchhal, A. R. Rahman and Sachin–Jigar. During the year, he sung "Humdard", "Manwa Laage", "Sun Le Zara", "Sajde", two songs of Zid and three tracks of Holiday, to name a few. Gannguli-comoposed Muskurane garnered him most nominations from the year, while he received two Filmfare nominations for Suno Na Sangemarmar and the sufi song Mast Magan.

Composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the song is sung by Arijit Singh and Chinmayi, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The music video of the track features actors Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

Director of the film, Abhishek Varman wanted Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to compose the music for the album, in order to create a romantic album that has soul and "young energy" in it. Producer of the film, Sajid Nadiadwala selected the song as his most favorite track from the album. Nadiawala and Karan Johar felt that Singh's voice has a "haunting quality" and makes the song stay with the listener. The video of the song shows how the bond between their respective characters—Punjabi Krish Malhotra and Tamilian Ananya Swaminathan—strengthens. "Mast Magan" was filmed at locations in Tamil Nadu including a temple at Mylapore and a pier at Ennore beach.

The song was released on 15 March 2014, as part of the soundtrack of the album. The music video of the song was officially released on 26 March 2014, through the YouTube channel of T-Series. Upon its release, "Mast Magan" was met with positive reviews from critics; most of the critics praising the vocals by Singh and its composition by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for having a sufi touch though it. Commercially, the song fared well, peaking at first in the iTunes chart of India and Mauritius with Mirchi Top 20 chart; the song also peaked at four in the Top Asian Download Charts.

The album is the story of five men and their love affair with music. The album consists of a Hindi song sung by Arijit Singh, composed by Sandeep Chowta and co produced by Chowta and Spyro Gyra. It is the first time a Western group has released a song with lyrics entirely in Hindi. The album was released on September 13, 2011.

Upon release the album was positioned at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. AllMusic's Jonathan Widran opined that "the most interesting tracks are the beautiful, poignant vocal tracks by Keb' Mo' and Fernandez" and stated the band "still had something fresh to say while fearlessly entering their fifth decade of recording". JazzTimes's Brian Soergel concluded the review stating "this is the CD that many casual Spyro Gyra fans have been waiting for". Howard Dukes from Soul Tracks praised the songs in the album and stated "The ease in which the band amalgamates different international influences on A Foreign Affair is a reminder of why we call music the international language".
