Raising for Effective Giving (REG) is a charity fundraising non-governmental organization. Its members consist mostly of professional poker players and financial investors who pledge to donate a percentage of their income to selected charities.[1][2] Based on the idea of Effective altruism, REG donates to, and recommends, selected charities based on their cost-effectiveness.[3][4][5][6]

Transparency

The organization currently publishes semi-annual reports on its financial activities and donations.[7]

Including funds raised prior to the official launch event,[12] the organization had raised a total of over $1,000,000 for its supported causes as of December 2015.[13]

International coverage and reception

The organization has been mentioned on a number of mainstream international news outlets, including NPR,[14] ESPN,[15] and The Independent,[16] Sport1,[17][18] and Swiss daily newspaper Tages-Anzeiger.[19] Additional coverage within the international poker community includes Bluff Europe,[20][21] PokerNews,[22][23][24] and the PokerStars blog,[25] among others.

Two REG members, Martin Jacobson and Jorryt van Hoof, were among the November Nine that played at the World Series of Poker Main Event final table.[26] Jacobson placed first, earning him the title of poker world champion and winning $10,000,000, of which $250,000 was subsequently donated through REG.[27]

Criticism

Professional poker player Rupert Elder argued on his blog that it may be better to leave money for charity in one's will, instead of donating now, as REG recommends.[28] REG subsequently responded to Elder on their website.[29][30]
