Rubber mat

A rubber mat is a generic term for a piece of flat rubber, generally placed on a floor or other flat surface, which serves a range of purposes including:

  • providing a regular or flat surface, such as a mousepad.
  • protecting that which is beneath the mat, such as a place mat or the matting used in archival framing and preservation of documents and paintings.
  • protecting that which is above the mat, such as a wrestling or gymnastics mat, or an anti-vibration mat.
  • changing the state of that which passes above it, such as a doormat attracting dirt from shoes.

Using rubber mats for flooring and matting provide the benefits of safety, being environmentally friendly, and comfort.[1] Rubber mats are for outdoor and indoor activities for children. They are synonymous with overall flexibility, resilience and sturdiness.

Forms

Forms of rubber mats include rubber car mats, sheet rubber, rubber tiling for gyms and play areas, rubber flooring, equestrian rubber mats, and industrial rubber mats.

Rubber matting encompasses a wide variety of flooring and matting types that consist of rubber or partial rubber compounds. Categories of rubber mats include:

  • Equestrian rubber matting for horse stables and cleaning areas
  • Electrical rubber matting for conductive protection against electric shocks
  • Engineering matting
  • Anti-slip matting

Rubber car mats

Rubber car mats are an alternative to carpet or textile car mats and offer durable protection for a vehicle's floor. They often come with a raised heel pad and fixing clips. Many are customised to the model of car. Rubber car mats are usually cheaper and easier to maintain, having barely any special requirements for cleaning in most cases. They are also durable making them most popular car mat type.
