SS Tiger was a ship that was torpedoed on 1 April 1942, off the coast of Virginia. It sank as a result and its remains have been located as a shipwreck.
Tiger was an American Socony-Vacuum Oil Co. tanker completed 1917 at San Francisco, California. She was torpedoed 1 April 1942 while carrying 64,321 barrels (10,226.2 m3) of Navy fuel oil, by German submarine U-754. The torpedo hit Tiger on her starboard side aft of amidships tank #5. She was taken in tow and sank the next day in 55 feet (17 m) of water in Chesapeake Bay, 8.2 miles (13.2 km) east of Sandbridge Beach. She lies on her starboard side, quite broken up, at 58 feet (18 m). One life lost.[1]
