Southern Cross News is the name given to regional news services airing on the Southern Cross Television and Southern Cross Ten television networks in Australia. News programming produced by Southern Cross' television stations varies between the various markets - with full services in Tasmania and western South Australia, and short basic updates in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT.

Much of the network's output is produced from the network's headquarters and presentation facilities in the Canberra suburb of Watson. The current news director is Alison Drower.

Southern Cross Television

As the following stations are affiliate broadcasters of the Seven Network the following Seven News national programs are aired on these stations:

  • Seven Early News
  • Sunrise (Weekdays) & Weekend Sunrise
  • Seven Morning News
  • Seven News at 5
  • Sunday Night

These stations, starting 2014-15, also air the statewide editions of Seven Afternoon News (Queensland only), formerly these stations also broadcast the national edition from Melbourne and later from Sydney, which are retained only for Tasmania and the Spencer Gulf and Broken Hill areas.

Tasmania

Southern Cross News (Tasmania) is presented by Jo Palmer on weeknights and Rachael Williams on weekends from TNT Launceston Studios. Sport is presented by Chris Rowbottom on weeknights and Katelyn Barry on weekends. Weather is presented by Peter Murphy on weeknights and Laura Moore. Southern Cross News overtook the rival Win News rating in 2011. And it still remains consistently the highest rating television programing in Tasmania.

Southern Cross News bulletins often brand themselves with Seven News brands, from time to time. And short updates also air throughout the day alongside the national Seven News Updates.

Spencer Gulf and Broken Hill

Southern Cross GTS/BKN broadcasts a 30-minute local news program for the Spencer Gulf and Broken Hill areas each weeknight at 6.30pm, following Seven News Adelaide in place of Today Tonight. The bulletin is presented by Tim Hatfield who is also the program Executive Producer and Chief Of Staff from Southern Cross's Canberra headquarters- with reporters and videojournalists based at newsrooms in Port Pirie, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln and Whyalla.

Darwin, Mount Isa and remote areas

Short news updates throughout the day are broadcast on Southern Cross stations serving greater Darwin, Mount Isa and remote areas of eastern, southern and central Australia, presented from Canberra by Aggie Bradshaw.

Under previous owners, a local Seven News bulletin for Darwin and Central Australia was produced until 2000. Separate update services were introduced in 2005 before being merged into one service in 2013.

Southern Cross Ten

Since 2004, short local news updates have been broadcast throughout the day on Southern Cross Ten stations in regional areas of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. These bulletins often brand themselves both with the Southern Cross News and Ten Eyewitness News brands, from time to time. The updates are produced from Southern Cross' Canberra studios and make use of news content from local radio stations owned by Southern Cross Austereo in each market. Local sport and weather reports also air on an sporadic basis. Short updates also air throughout the day and evening alongside updates from Ten Eyewitness News (state level during the day and the national level updates during the night). The bulletins are researched, produced and presented by a single journalist.

These channels also transmit Studio 10, all the Ten Eyewitness News afternoon telecasts at 5pm (state level on weekdays and the national edition on weekends from Sydney), The Bolt Report (Sundays) and The Project (weekdays only).

TDT Ten News

In 2013, Southern Cross News began airing updates on TDT in Tasmania. As the station is co-owned by Southern Cross Austereo and the WIN Corporation, it does not have any on-air association with either station and is branded as TDT Ten Eyewitness News. The updates follow the same format as updates airing on Southern Cross Ten stations. Aggie Bradshaw is the current presenter.
