Stéphane Moraille

Stéphane Moraille is a Montreal lawyer, politician, and former musician, who ran as a New Democratic Party candidate for the federal byelection in the riding of Bourassa on November 25, 2013.

History

An entertainment lawyer and politician, Stephane Moraille ran for the NDP in the Bourassa riding in 2013. She is a singer and was formerly part of the band Bran Van 3000, including on the band's biggest hit "Drinking in L.A.".

Following international touring both as a member of the band Bran Van 3000 and previously as a dance artist, Shauna Davis, Stéphane Moraille completed her law degree and was admitted to the Bar in 2001. A stalwart supporter of creative works, Stéphane Moraille practices in Cinema, Television, Music and Technology (E&O, key agreements, corporate law and financing) law. She holds a Masters in Intellectual Property Law from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School and she regularly teaches and speaks on legal and practical issues of the digital entertainment industry. In addition, she has served as a chair, panelist and speaker at various events and conferences including the Forum Droit D'auteur à l'ère numérique : enjeux et perspectives from the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications. The Haitian-born singer/songwriter first made her mark in the world of electronic music with the Shauna Davis Project in 1995 through the crossover dance song, “Get Away” which received a nomination for a Juno and Much Music Video Award and launched an international tour with such artists as DJ/producers David Morales, Stonebridge, Todd Terry and the likes. The 1997 album “Glee” became an immediate success, notably with “Drinking in LA”. The song would go on to become a top 5 smash on both pop and alternative charts around the world, including a position of 2 in the United Kingdom charts. The song became part of Canadiana pop culture, later featured in a number films, television shows, and ad campaigns. The band continued a hectic touring schedule until 2000, sharing the stage with such artists as Björk (in Paris), Massive Attack (Netherlands), Pulp (London), and Prodigy and the Cream Festival in the UK. The group also performed in the Horde Festival, Montreal International Jazz Fest, Modena Festival in Italia, Sun Festival in Central Park, NXNE in Toronto, and SXSW in Austin. On July 1, 2008 Bran van 3000’s returned to throw the biggest block party Montreal has ever seen, breaking all attendances records (200 000 and counting). Stéphane electrified once again the audience with her powerhouse vocals. BV3 and Stéphane also appeared on the famed Conan O'Brien Show on NBC in the United States, BBC’s Top of the Pops in the UK, and, MTV, Much Music and Musique Plus and earned several awards, including a Much Music Video Award, Juno, Felix, Videofact Award, SOCAN prize, and a Canadian Radio Music Award. Bran Van 300 was nominated in 2015 for the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize.

Stephane is a recording artist with Audiogram, her record is set to be released in 2016.
