Ureaplasma infection is an infection by two species in the genus Ureaplasma, Infections caused Ureaplasma urealyticum are more common than infections caused by Ureaplasma parvum. Ureaplama infection is a sexually transmitted infection. This infection can also be transmitted vertically from an infected mother to her child before or after birth.[medical citation needed] Ureaplasma spp are not part of the healthy, female vaginal microbiota. Infection with this bacterium is one cause of bacterial vaginosis and pelvic inflammatory disease.[1][2][3] It is a significant cause of non-gonococcal urethritis.[4]
