Madhavaram is a Northern Suburb of Chennai city. it is a locality in Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Madhavaram is one among the nine taluks namely Ambattur, Gummindipoondi, Ponneri, Uthukkottai, Tiruvallur, Poonamallee, Tiruttani and Pallipattu, Madhavaram of Thiruvallur district.[1] National Highway 5 (NH 5) passes through this area. As of 2011, the town had a population of 119,105.

History

The Madhavaram taluk was formed on 1 July 2009 following the bifurcation of the large Ambattur taluk, which consisted of five fircas. The new taluk consists of two fircas (Madhavaram and Red Hills) and 36 revenue villages.It is the ninth taluk in Thiruvallur district.[2] The old name of Madhavaram is Mahatavapuram, as seen in a stone in front of the Ganesh Mandir in Rajaji Street.

According to 2011 census, Madhavaram had a population of 119,105 with a sex-ratio of 989 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929.[4] A total of 13,030 were under the age of six, constituting 6,703 males and 6,327 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 12.4% and .28% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the town was 80.61%, compared to the national average of 72.99%.[4] The town had a total of 29792 households. There were a total of 43,385 workers, comprising 148 cultivators, 233 main agricultural labourers, 765 in house hold industries, 36,871 other workers, 5,368 marginal workers, 89 marginal cultivators, 65 marginal agricultural labourers, 283 marginal workers in household industries and 4,931 other marginal workers.[5] As per the religious census of 2011, Madavaram (M) had 82.73% Hindus, 4.08% Muslims, 12.48% Christians, 0.05% Sikhs, 0.04% Buddhists, 0.16% Jains, 0.46% following other religions and 0.01% following no religion or did not indicate any religious preference.[6]

During 2001-2011, Madhavaram registered a population growth of 56 percent with a 2011 population of 118,525.[7]

Madhavaram Truck Terminal

In the interest of the economy and trade and to decongest the Central Business District, CMDA has developed the Truck Terminal at Madhavaram over an extent about 100 acres (0.40 km2) at the cost of about Rs. 6 crores. It is located near the junction of 100 feet (30 m) Road and the GNT Road, with easy access to Chennai city, port and railways. The terminal has been functioning since 1992. The objective of the project is to provide modern and functionally efficient truck terminals for the city, beneficial to the transport operators, lorry booking agents and general public.

Social organizations

Madhavaram has a good number of organizations. The most notable organization is "West Cancer Trust". They create cancer awareness among the locals by counseling them and screening for both the rural mass and the students.

Administration and politics

Madhavaram is a newly formed state legislative constituency with more than 2 lakh voters. It consists of areas like Mathur MMDA, Manali, Milk Colony, Madhavaram, Puzhal, Redhills, Sholavaram and Vadakarai. It was divided from the biggset taluk of Tiruvallur (Ambattur). In its first election, V. Moorthy, District Secretary of AIADMK won by defeating the DMK canditate with a margin of 34,000 votes.

Transportation

Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) runs passenger buses to Madhavaram from other major parts of Chennai such as 29C (Extn.) from Thiruvanimaiyur. A bus terminus had been built in the yesteryears which serves the residents. The bus routes operated from here are 38H to Broadway, 48A to Ambattur Industrial Estate and 170A to Tambaram. Share Autos play an important role in transportation here.

Srinivasa Nagar, Kathirval street, Manjambakkam, Gilburn Nagar (formally called Kilburn Nagar), Perumal Kovil Street, Palaniappa Nagar, Thapalpetti, Sivasakthi Nagar, Bharathiyar Street, Rajaji Street (Agraharam Street), Pukraj Nagar, VRD Nagar, Swami Nagar, Bus Stand, Market, KKR Town, KKR Garden, KKR Nagar, Burma Colony, Muthu Mariamman Kovil Street, Vathiyar Thottam, Thirumurugan Nagar, MCR Nagar, M. C. Sundaravaradhan Nagar, St. Joseph's Garden, Malliga Garden, Omakulamedu, Ponniammanmedu, Ravi Garden, Assisi Nagar, and Seethapathy Street are some of the neighbourhoods.

Places of worship

There is a Sivan Temple, [8] in Madhavaram which is believed to be 1,300 years old. There is also a Vishnu Temple. [9] Apart from these, there are some small temples in the locality. St. Sebastian's Church, the local parish, is in Madhavaram along with its co-chapel, St. Anne's (Round Chapel). C. S. I. Arul Church is on MTH Road. A. G. Church is located in KKR Garden.

Apart from these, there are few nursing homes and clinics for health care.

Ornamental Garden

An ornamental garden on an 18-acre site is being developed for which the founding stone was laid on 15 September 2010. The garden has been planned to be developed in a year at a cost of INR 59.3 million. The proposed facility would have different types of flowers and also a herbal garden along with a nursery. Fountains, a birds' sanctuary, an auditorium and a children's play area are other facilities being developed in the garden.

The Horticulture Training Centre in Madhavaram would also be upgraded to Horticulture Management Institute at a cost of INR 39 million.[10]
