Pandian Express is a superfast overnight express train of the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways which runs daily between Madurai Junction and Chennai Egmore via Tiruchirapalli and vice versa.

Introduction

The name of the train commemorates the 6th century BC to 17th century AD Pandyan Dynasty or Pandian Kingdom of Tamil Nadu. It is a standard train consisting of 24 coaches. The main stops on the way are Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur, Tiruchirapalli and Dindigul. The train operates daily and covers a distance of 497 km (309 mi). The train runs at a top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph). It is a Prestigious train with Southern Railways Zone. It shares rake with Rockfort Express and is maintained at Madurai.

This train had the livery changed twice - first it had the "Olive-Green livery", separated by 2 yellow-lines between the upper & lower part of the windows & later on it was changed to "Maroon colour" on the MG.

This train was numbered as 6717/6718 when it was run on MG. It is now hauled by WAP 7 loco from Royapuram Loco Shed from Madurai to Chennai Egmore and via the same route.

Schedule

Train number 12637 departs at 21:20 hours from Chennai Egmore and arrives at 6.15 hours at Madurai Junction. Train number 12638 from Madurai to Chennai starts at 20:35 Hours from Madurai and reaches Chennai Egmore by 05:35 Hours.[1][2] The Train Also has a rake-sharing agreement with Rockfort Express as (16177/16178) from Chennai to Trichy.

Coach Composition

It has one AC First cum AC Two Tier,One AC First Class, two Ac Two Tier,four Ac Three Tier, twelve Sleeper Class, two Unreserved and two SLRs.

Speed of the Train

Pandian Express is the one of the fastest trains in Southern Railways. Its running along with average speed of 54 km/hr. Its pulled by Electric Loco WAP-7 (RPM) at the full running section.[3]
