Rita Hester (30 November 1963-1998) was an African American man who identified as a woman and worked as a prostitute. He was murdered in Allston, MA on November 28, 1998.[1]
The killer was never identified and investigators concluded that "The motive for the attack remains a mystery." So there is no evidence for the "transphobia" theory.
Nevertheless, campaigners decided to exploit it for their own propaganda. Her death inspired the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Hester is named as a heroine and a martyr in this LGBT promotional article. [2]
