The church is part of the Tønjum parish in the Indre Sogn deanery in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church building, which has 175 seats, was built in 1832. It was consecrated on 30 September 1832 by Bishop Jacob Neumann. Tønjum Church is the smallest church in the municipality, but it is the main church for Laerdal municipality.
