Alphonse Alfred François Dupront (26 December 1905 – 16 June 1990) was a French historian and anthropologist.

Biography

Alphonse Dupront was born at Condom, Gers, in southwestern France. A former student of the ENS (class of 1925, Letters), he passed the agrégation in history and geography (1929) and entered the École française de Rome (1930–1932). He then directed the French Institute of Advanced Studies in Romania and the university mission in Bucharest, and became cultural advisor (1932–1941). He then became a lecturer at the University of Montpellier and defended his doctoral thesis in 1956 at the Sorbonne: Le Mythe de Croisade. Essai de sociologie religieuse, which was published posthumously in 1997 at the instigation of Pierre Nora and a number of his former disciples. In 1956, he became a professor at the Sorbonne and was elected in 1960 to the EPHE (section IV) to lead a study group entitled "Collective Psychology and the History of European Civilization".[1]

Alphonse Dupront was the founder and first president of the Paris-Sorbonne University in 1970. He created the Center for European Religious Anthropology at the EHESS and played a decisive role in the creation and establishment in Florence of the European University Institute, where he taught from 1976 to 1983.

His thesis and major work, Le mythe de croisade ("The Myth of the Crusade") is part of a multidisciplinary genre: history, anthropology, sociology, philosophy (his primary training) and collective psychology. Alphonse Dupront analyzes, "after the crusade", the persistence and mutations of the crusade myth in the collective unconscious[2] of the Christian West throughout history.
