Annette J. Smith

Annette J. Smith (born August 12, 1924) is a French literary scholar, translator and academic.

Biography

Annette J. Leblanc was born in Algiers. Her family was part of the French community in Algeria. She attended the Sorbonne, receiving a BA in classics (French, Latin, Greek, and Philology).

After teaching at Scripps College and Claremont Men’s College, Smith was visiting professor of French at Caltech from 1970 to 1982, appointed associate professor with tenure in 1982, promoted to professor of French in 1985, and Professor of Literature emeritus since 1993. Smith translated the poetry of Aimé Césaire and the tales of Arthur de Gobineau.

She was married to the professor of literature David Smith (1923–1990).
