Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Honiara

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Honiara is a Latin Rite Metropolitan Archdiocese in the Solomon Islands.

Its Cathedral episcopal see is the Holy Cross Cathedral Holy Cross Cathedral in Honiara, on Guadalcanal.

History

It was established on 27 July 1897 as Apostolic Prefecture of British Solomons (a pre-diocesan missionary jurisdiction, exempt, i.e. directly subject to the Holy See), on territory split off from the then Apostolic Vicariate of New Pomerania.

On 21 January 1904, it was renamed as Apostolic Prefecture of South Solomons.

It was promoted on 1 June 1912 as Apostolic Vicariate of South Solomons, hence entitled to a titular bishop.

On 11 June 1959, it lost territory to establish the then Apostolic Vicariate of Western Solomon Islands.

On 15 November 1966, it was promoted as Diocese of Honiara and on 15 November 1978 again promoted as Metropolitan Archdiocese of Honiara.

On 17 December 1982, it lost territory to establish its suffragan Diocese of Auki.

It enjoyed a papal visit from Pope John Paul II in May 1984.
