Club career
Kolašinac began his career in his hometown club, Karlsruher SC.[2] After eight years of playing for Kalsruhe, Kolašinac joined TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, where he played a season, afterwards being bought by VfB Stuttgart.[2] Kolašinac's stay at Stuttgart was short-lived, and a season later, he joined Schalke 04.[2]
Schalke 04
After spending a season with the youth team, Kolašinac was promoted to the second team, Schalke 04 II, in one of the German lower leagues, Regionalliga West. After playing seven matches and scoring two goals for Schalke 04 II, he was promoted to the first team. On 15 September 2012, he made his Bundesliga debut in a 2–0 win over Greuther Fürth.[3] In December 2012, he played in his first game in European competitions, which was a 1–1 draw against Montpellier, in the UEFA Champions League.
In June 2013 Kolašinac extended his contract with Schalke to June 2017.[4] At the beginning of the following season Kolašinac tore the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee and was out for approximately six months.[5]
International career
Kolašinac has a German passport and after playing his youth career for Germany, Kolašinac switched allegiance to his parents' homeland Bosnia and Herzegovina and received a call-up for the country's senior national team in 2013. His father stated in an interview that was always the player's first choice to play for the Bosnian national team.[6] On 18 November 2013, Kolašinac made his debut for Bosnia in the 2–0 friendly loss against Argentina.[7] He was named in Bosnia's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.[8] In the third minute of the team's opening group match, Kolašinac scored an unfortunate own goal, the fastest in World Cup history, as Argentina ran out 2–1 winners at the Estádio do Maracanã.[9]
Personal life
Kolašinac was born in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, to Bosniak parents.[10] His father, Faik, works at a Mercedes factory. Faik was born in Nikšić, SR Montenegro, to parents from Plav, SR Montenegro; the family moved to Čapljina, SR Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1969, where Faik met his wife.[10] The family, including Sead, are practising Muslims.[10]
As well as having a German passport Kolašinac was given a Bosnian passport in 2013 and decided to play for the Bosnian national team.[10]
Style of play
Kolašinac is regarded as a defensive all-rounder which means that he can be deployed in multiple defensive positions.[11] In Kolašinac's Schalke 04 II career, he was deployed mostly as a centre back or defensive midfielder.[11] Schalke head coach Jens Keller has primarily deployed Kolašinac as a left full-back; a playing position in which Kolašinac has received praise.[11] Kolašinac is deemed to be physically strong and tough in his physique, clever defensively on the pitch and defensively consistent in winning one-on-one duels against his opponents.
