The 2016–17 Aviva Premiership will be the 30th season of the top flight of English domestic rugby union competition, and the seventh to be sponsored by Aviva. The competition will be broadcast by BT Sport for the fourth successive season. Highlights of each weekend's games are shown on ITV4.


Teams

Bristol, having beaten Doncaster 60 - 47 on aggregate in the Greene King IPA Championship play–off final, replace London Irish, who were relegated last season after finishing bottom of the table having only won 4 league games.[1]

If teams are level at any stage, tiebreakers are applied in the following order:

  1. Number of matches won
  2. Difference between points for and against
  3. Total number of points for
  4. Aggregate number of points scored in matches between tied teams
  5. Number of matches won excluding the first match, then the second and so on until the tie is settled
Green background (rows 1 to 4) are play-off places and earns a berth in the 2017–18 European Rugby Champions Cup.
Blue background (rows 5 & 6) indicates teams outside the play-off places, that earns a berth in the 2017–18 European Rugby Champions Cup.
Yellow background indicates the team that advances to a play-off for a chance to compete in the 2017–18 European Rugby Champions Cup.
Plain background indicates teams that earn a place in the 2017–18 European Rugby Challenge Cup.
Red background (row 12) will be relegated, if the Greene King IPA Championship play-off finalists meet the promotion criteria.

Pre-season

The 2016 edition of the Singha Premiership Rugby Sevens will held in July and August. Once again, the four Welsh Regions will contest a group, alongside the twelve Premiership clubs, which are split into three groups. The top two sides from each group will contest the series final at the Ricoh Arena on 6 August.

Regular season

Fixtures for the season will announced by Premiership Rugby on 7 July 2016.[2] As is the norm, round 1 is expected to include the London Double Header at Twickenham.


Play-offs

As with previous season, the top four teams will contest the semi-finals in a 1st v 4th, 2nd v 3rd format. The two remaining teams will then face off in the final held at Twickenham in late May.
