Season

Having won Italian title in previous season Inter could play in European Cup, came to his ninth edition. Herrera's side started his path in first round, knocking Everton out with a 1–0 aggregate. Before 1963 could expire, they also beated Monaco on a 4–1 total. Meanwhile, domestic league shown a struggle against Bologna despite Inter had to postpone several matches:[2] "Nerazzurri" ended the first half in second placement.[2] As 1964 came, Partizan and Borussia Dortmund was both knocked out of cup resulting that Inter reached final match at first presence.

In latest days of May, season expired with the European winning (3–1 over Real Madrid, with two goals scored from Mazzola) and the ex-aequo arrival in league: en fact, Inter and Bologna had earned 54 points both.[2] This made useful, for first and last time in Italian championship history, a title play-off that was played in Rome 7 days after league's end.[2] Inter was beaten 2–0, failing to retain title and resulting second overall.[2]
