Richard Armiger
Richard Armiger is professional Architectural Model Maker and founder of Network Modelmakers in Notting Hill, London. He also serves as the Director of House Portrait Models, which creates hand-crafted model portraits for private estates.
His creative and influential[1] architectural models have been published widely and examples can be found in museums in Europe and North America including the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Architecture Room at the annual Royal Academy of Arts Summer Show, and regularly at the Venice Biennale of Architecture.[2][3] [4] [5] [6]
His architectural consultancy models, for John Pawson, Zaha Hadid, the late Jan Kaplicky and others, have appeared frequently at London's Design Museum. The Design Museum's exhibition David Chipperfield - Form Matters, which has been transferred to the Fundación Pedro Barrié de la Maza, Coruña, Spain and other world venues during 2010-2012,[7][8] contained a large selection of his models including Sir David's shortlisted Tate Gallery entry.
Early career
Born in Baltimore, Maryland USA, Armiger attended Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) studying painting and sculpture. In England, he studied industrial design model making at the University for the Creative Arts thereafter settling in the UK.[9]
Prior to establishing Network Modelmakers, he gained experience with Cambridge Seven Associates, Casson Conder and Partners, Wolff Olins, Arup and the BBC. A subsidiary of Network Modelmakers - House Portrait Models - was established in 1999.[9]
Architectural Competition
Many London-based architects commission his models for projects of international stature and for architectural design competition.[10][11][12] The tally of Armiger's models of design competition projects won by Nicholas Grimshaw Architects alone is significant:[13]
- Caixa Art Gallery, A Coruña, Spain
- National Space Centre, Leicester, UK
- Southern Cross Station, Melbourne, Australia
- Enneus Heerma Bridge, Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Frankfurt Exhibition Hall, Germany
- Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Missouri, USA
In 2006, Armiger and his team developed a model measuring 4 meters square that became the winning entry for Singapore's Gardens by the Bay competition, won jointly by Grant Associates landscape designers and Wilkinson Eyre architects.
Crossrail Models
As consultant Model Coordinator to Crossrail, Richard Armiger helped clarify the project's complexity to the Parliamentary Select Committee and other design laymen.[14]
